I posted this article from Celcias in the right-hand sidebar links (toward the bottom), but the information in this post is just too important not to highlight here. The article contains detailed recycling tips from an Envionmental Engineering student on some common mistakes that people make while sorting recycling, and even when making purchases that they believe are recyclable.

Though it appears that the article is geared towards US recycling programs, the information it provides is probably widely applicable to recycling acround the globe. Among the suprising (to me at least) tidbits:

  • Greasy papers/plastics result in the rejection of your whole batch of recyclables!
  • Waxed paper not allowed, like milk cartons, fast food wraps, drink boxes.
  • #3 plastics are almost exclusively PVC, aka “poison plastic“. Don’t buy!
  • Take a few minutes and read the article. The opacity of US recycling programs needs fixing, and this article attempts to provide valuable info to bridge the gaps between the consumer’s perception of how/what to recycle and the typical post-consumer process.
