We enjoyed a bike filled weekend in PDX these last few days. First, on Friday evening, we headed downtown to the North Park Blocks for the Portland Twilight Criterium, with pro racers averaging 30+ mph on the closed streets around a half-mile technical course. The course is situated so that the spectators can watch from within the park in the center of the course, which made for some great peloton viewing. Saturday I volunteered for the Portland Century, and we registered over half the riders that afternoon, handing out bib numbers and cue books down at Madison’s Grill in the Hawthorne neighborhood. Sunday I rode the half-century route (riding bib number 777), and had a great time. The course was uncrowded while at the same time there were plenty of packs to spin with for a while, and the freebies were everywhere, pizza and sandwiches at the rest areas, free beer at the finish and a very nice salmon and veggies dinner from Madison Grill to boot. I also received quite a few compliments on the LHT from other touring minded riders.
