My tourer on the Columbia R.Allow me to self-indulge, as I have finally gotten around to taking some pictures of my Surly LHT touring bike, for the Surlyville Long Haul Trucker and Crosscheck owner’s group. The bike is rugged and comfortable, even off-road, and the LHT frame fits me superbly (thanks to many sessions with the Wrench Science fit calculator). All of the bike components were hand-picked and assembled by your’s truly (aided by the ever handy Barnett’s Manual), with some much appreciated help from the incomparable Dave Bohm of Bohemian Bicycles on the head tube facing and bearing installations. If you aren’t familiar with Dave’s work, take a minute to peruse his gallery of rolling art.

Rear view. Some of the bike’s highlights include a 6v Schmidt SON Nabendynamo front hub and Phil Wood FSC Touring rear hub all laced to a pair of hand-built black Velocity Dyad wheels rolling on 35c Schwalbe Marathon Slicks. The drive train is mostly mountain, and consists of a Shimano 9spd (12/34) XTR rear cassette, matched ‘06 shimano XTR mountain-bike front and rear derailleurs, a Sugino triple (22-36-46) up front and Shimano bar-end shifters mounted on Nitto Randonneur bars. The eco-geek factor is provided by a LED-powered Inoled 20+ headlight and a Busch & Müller DToplight Plus taillight, both of which run on capacitor power for several minutes after pedaling stops (the whole system meets Germany’s excellent StVZO regulations for bicycle lighting - no AAA blinky-blinks here!). Click on the images for lightbox views (yes, that is Mt. Hood is the distance in that first image), and check out the gallery for more pics.
