This is pretty darn cool. The free application, Google Earth has added a feature that highlights global environmental issues, and the first to be featured is right here in the US. The new layers feature also includes World Wildlife Fund project sites.

The destruction caused by mountaintop removal for coal in the Appalachians doesn’t get the national press coverage that some Western US timber sales do, but it is a long-term fight that needs national attention. I witnessed the destruction caused by some of these mines and was able to learn about the fight to save the Appalachians first hand on my AT adventure. Check out the ILoveMountains site for more detailed information of what is being done to save one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world.
