This link was in my delicious posts on the sidebar for a while, but it is just too cool to not mention more prominently. Eco-housing is becoming all the rage, but this family has literally built their home with on-site and found materials, and the result is astounding.

I’ve been researching organic structures for a while now with the goal of eventually building my own home. My personal favorite construction method right now is cobb (thanks to Courtnay and Colter for introducing me to cobb building). Cobb has a high thermal mass and a low insulative capacity and is well suited for cooler and wetter climates like the Pacific Northwest.

We met some cobb builders from the Cobb Cottage Company on Orcas Island last summer. They had just finished building the walls for a cobb house as part of a builder’s workshop. Check out the House Alive! gallery to see what it is all about.
