As a self-avowed Japanophile, I’m disgusted and disappointed at the position its government continues to take regarding commercial whaling. Japanese whaling fleets have continued to be engaged in illegal whaling operations despite a 20 year ban on the practice, killing almost 900 minke and fin whales last year.

Unfortunately, whaling season is upon us again, and following hard on the heels of a tragic political decision by the IWC that calls for the ‘eventual’ lifting of the ban on commercial whaling. Meanwhile the degradation of ocean habitat and extinction of species continues to occur at an alarming pace.
